The average cocoa farmer earns around 50 cents a day in Côte d’Ivoire and about 84 cents a day in Ghana, well below the extreme poverty line of $1.25 per day. Given the small scale of farms, relatively low yield, and little power to influence value distribution across the cocoa value chain, increasing products in the sector have not reached cocoa farmers, and their income remains very low. This drives demand for cheap labor, allowing an environment where labor exploitation and modern slavery can exist.

In 2008, Anti-Slavery International estimated that 29% of child domestic workers making "bidis" (hand-rolled cigarettes) in Tamil Nadu, India, are in debt bondage.
Anti-Slavery International, 2008Bidi (hand-rolled cigarettes) workers in India are largely paid per item. They are often given a set amount of leaves and tobacco to make 1000 bidis. If there is not enough, workers are forced to buy additional tobacco to complete their quota.
